Type, barcodes or halftone dots can appear stretched, smeared or doubled in the machine direction even when the colour-to-colour register controls have not moved. Treating that symptom as ordinary misregister can turn one defect into two. Slur is a relative movement during the printing contact; doubling produces a second displaced image. Preserve the first failed sample, mark the web direction and prove which condition is present before changing register, ink or plate position.
Describe the movement on the printed sample
Keep samples from the last accepted print, the first visible fault and the current press condition. Mark press, deck, colour, lane, machine direction, speed, time and repeat. Under the maintained magnification used by the plant, compare type edges, fine rules, barcodes, halftone dots and any slur target carried by the job. Do not rely on a general description such as fuzzy print.
Slur usually lengthens or smears the printed feature in one direction because the plate surface and substrate do not travel together through the nip. Doubling shows two distinguishable impressions of the same feature. Colour-to-colour misregister moves one colour relative to another without necessarily distorting the individual dot. Record which colours and image areas are affected so those patterns are not treated as the same fault.
Check whether the symptom is present from startup, enters during acceleration, appears only at normal speed or begins after the press has warmed. Note whether its direction and severity remain constant. Flexographic Technical Association troubleshooting guidance recommends using the nature, direction and frequency of a defect as evidence. That sequence can separate a setup condition from a speed, tension or mechanical condition.
Return impression, repeat and web tension to the approved baseline
Reset anilox-to-plate and plate-to-substrate impression through the press maker's maintained procedure. Excess plate impression can deform the image and increase sliding at the nip. Confirm the cleanest kiss impression that transfers the required image, then retain a labelled sample. Do not reduce impression blindly if the plate, tape or cylinder package is already outside the job standard.
Confirm the repeat specified in the artwork, plate, sleeve or cylinder and press settings. Check that the mounted plate and job record agree, and measure the printed repeat by the plant's approved method. An incorrect repeat or a plate that has changed dimension can create an apparent register problem that electronic register correction will not remove.
Review unwind, infeed, interstation and rewind tension records together with the web path. Inspect the substrate for slip, drag or unstable contact and check that impression rolls, idlers and chill rolls are clean and turning freely. FTA's slurred-print guidance lists substrate tension or press slip, incorrect repeats and overimpression among the pressroom causes. Make one controlled correction rather than moving several tension zones at once.
Inspect the plate, tape, sleeve and drive condition
With the press stopped and isolated under the plant procedure, inspect the affected plate before cleaning away useful evidence. Check the plate identification, surface, thickness and edges; mounting tape grade and condition; butt joint; sleeve or cylinder seating; and any sign that the plate has lifted, swollen or moved. A register move cannot correct a plate surface that changes shape under load.
Compare the plate and tape hardness combination with the qualified job record. FTA reporting on slur notes the need for balance between plate and tape hardness and identifies plate swelling as a possible contributor. That does not mean a softer tape is the automatic answer. Density, dot gain, solid laydown, plate support and substrate still have to pass together in an optimisation trial.
Inspect the sleeve, adaptor, air mandrel, gears or servo interface, bearings and impression roll according to the machine maintenance plan. Look for contamination, incomplete seating, runout, backlash, looseness or a component whose circumference matches a repeating disturbance. If the fault is random, measure the distance between events and compare it with the relevant roller circumferences before replacing a plate or changing register values.
Prove the correction through the complete speed range
Choose the first correction from the evidence: restore kiss impression, correct the repeat, stabilise one tension zone, clean a dragging roll, remount the plate or repair the identified mechanical condition. Allow the press to stabilise and retain a sample before making another change. If the fault disappears, repeat the same startup and acceleration sequence to show that the correction is reproducible.
Run at startup, intermediate and normal production speed for a representative period. Inspect the same slur target, dots, rules, reverse text and barcode at each point. FTA's print-quality inspection guidance includes device-assisted measurement of slur and doubling; use the maintained instrument and method where the plant has one. Visual approval alone is weak when the movement is close to the customer limit.
Release the job only after individual colour detail, colour-to-colour register, printed repeat, density or colour, dot area, barcode scan and downstream requirements pass together. Keep the failed and accepted samples with the settings and corrective action. For a Royal Coat review, send the press and deck, substrate, plate and tape specification, sleeve or cylinder details, repeat, speed and tension history, impression settings and magnified samples marked with machine direction.
Questions from production and purchasing teams
What to ask about flexo print slur and doubling
Is stretched flexo print always a register problem?
No. Slur can distort an individual printed feature even when colour-to-colour register is stable. Mark the machine direction and inspect one colour's dots or fine rules before moving register.
Can too much impression cause flexo slur?
Yes. Excess impression can deform the image and increase relative movement at the printing nip. Return to the approved kiss-impression method and check the complete plate package.
Can mounting tape cause slurred print?
Plate and tape hardness must work as a qualified combination. An unsuitable or damaged tape can affect support, but any change must also preserve density, dots, solids and register.
Why does slur appear only when the press accelerates?
Speed can expose unstable web tension, slip, drag, incomplete sleeve seating or a mechanical condition that is not visible during a slow setup. Keep samples from the speed where the fault begins.
What evidence is useful for a flexo slur investigation?
Keep sequential samples marked with machine direction, press speed, deck and time, plus plate, tape, sleeve, repeat, tension, impression and maintenance records. Include magnified images of the affected feature.
