An anilox roller can leave the press printing correctly and return with a chipped edge, scored engraving, contaminated surface or damaged journal. When that happens, the pressroom may blame the last job, the cleaner or the next operator without checking the storage and transport route between them. Treat every off-press roller as a precision component with an identity, condition and protected location. The useful audit starts when the roller is removed from the machine and ends only when it is installed again without an impact, mix-up or unrecorded change.

Record the roller identity before it leaves the press

Capture the roller serial number, engraving specification, press and unit, job, ink or coating, removal time and operator. Add the normal storage location and the next planned use. If the engraved specification is difficult to read in the rack, correct the identification system rather than relying on memory or a handwritten loose tag.

Inspect the working face, edges, journals and bearings under suitable light. Record dried ink, coating residue, score lines, chips, corrosion marks, oil or grease and any impact evidence. Rotate the roller only by the approved support method. Do not roll the engraved surface across a bench or place it where loose tools, fasteners or metal edges can touch it.

Keep accepted and quarantined rollers visibly separate. A damaged roller returned to its normal rack can be selected during the next changeover and turn a storage problem into a print fault. Mark the reason for quarantine and preserve photographs before cleaning or handling removes the original evidence.

Clean, rinse and dry before fitting a protective cover

Follow the roller maker's cleaning instructions for the ink or coating system and roller construction. Zecher advises cleaning rollers when a production run is interrupted and at the end of each job, matching the cleaner to the inking system, rinsing away detergent residue and drying with a soft, clean, absorbent cloth. The approved chemical and method still depend on the actual roller and contamination.

Do not cover a roller that is wet, warm from a cleaning process or carrying chemical residue. A protective cover is not a substitute for a clean, dry surface. Record the cleaning product, dilution where applicable, start and finish time, rinse, drying check and any area that could not be restored by routine cleaning.

Use clean gloves and inspect the inside of the cover or mat before it contacts the roller. Zecher's care instructions say the surface should be kept free of oil and grease during work and that packing materials should be checked for cleanliness. Replace a dirty, torn or abrasive cover instead of transferring its contamination to a clean engraving.

Match the rack and cover to the stored orientation

Zecher advises a dry, dust-protected storage location and protection with suitable sleeves or mats when a roller is stored horizontally. For vertical storage, it recommends support to prevent tipping. These are starting conditions. The rack design, roller mass, journal arrangement and plant safety assessment must determine the approved position and restraint for each roller.

Check where the load is actually carried. The engraved ceramic surface should not rest on a hard point, damaged padding, sharp rack edge or another roller. Confirm that journals and end faces have the intended supports and that the roller cannot move when an adjacent item is removed. Do not improvise supports from loose timber, foam scraps or packaging that can collapse or retain contamination.

Keep the storage area away from uncontrolled water, dust, chemical splash, fork-lift traffic and work that releases metal particles. Mark every rack position with the roller identity or controlled inventory reference. Zecher's accessories guidance describes colour and identification markings that can make the roller specification easier to recognise in storage, but the plant record should remain the controlling source.

Control the complete handling route to and from the press

Walk the route before moving a roller. Check floor condition, door clearance, turns, overhead obstructions, press access and the place where the roller will be unwrapped. Remove loose tooling from the destination. A suitable rack is ineffective if the roller is carried through a crowded route or laid temporarily on an unprotected bench.

Use lifting and transport equipment with the verified load capacity, approved contact points and plant procedure. Zecher's instructions call for load-bearing capacity to be checked before raising a roller, for lifting and transport safety to be considered, and for installation and removal to be carried out by trained specialists. Do not lift from an engraving, exposed edge or an attachment that has not been approved for that roller.

Keep the roller controlled and level as required by the manufacturer's method, and prevent it from slipping from a protective sleeve, mat or sling. Assign one person to direct the move when visibility or clearance is limited. Stop if the cover shifts, the roller contacts the trolley or the path changes. Continuing after a light impact can conceal damage that appears later as a print defect.

Inspect after any impact, mix-up or unexplained print change

Quarantine a roller after a drop, contact with a hard object, suspected bearing damage or a storage mix-up. Note the exact contact point, orientation, height where known and condition of the cover and rack. Do not return it to press merely because the damage is difficult to see with the unaided eye.

If colour strength or coating laydown changes after storage, first confirm the roller identity and job specification. Then compare the engraving condition, cleanliness and mechanical condition with the last accepted record. Avoid aggressive cleaning to prove that cells are blocked. A handling mark, wear and contamination need different corrective actions.

Zecher describes condition analysis of the roller body and engraving, including microscopic assessment and volume measurement. Its inspection service also provides remote surface assessment using AniloxStrips and multi-point volume checks. The inspection method should be selected with the supplier according to the roller, fault and evidence required, not chosen simply because it is available in-house.

Release the roller with a storage and changeover record

Before installation, verify the roller identity against the job ticket, remove the cover in a clean area and inspect the surface, edges, journals and bearings. Record the rack location, removal time, handler and condition. If the roller was quarantined or inspected, attach the disposition and approval rather than relying on a verbal handover between shifts.

Review damage and mix-up records by rack, route, press and changeover team. Repeated edge chips at one unit may indicate press access or installation technique. Repeated dirty covers may point to the storage process. A roller inventory can be technically correct and still perform poorly if its identification, protection and movement are uncontrolled.

Royal Coat represents Zecher anilox technology across India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Kenya. For a storage and handling review, send the roller and engraving list, weights and dimensions, rack photographs, present covers, cleaning record, movement route, lifting method, press access, damage history and any condition or volume reports already available.

Questions from production and purchasing teams

What to ask about anilox roller storage and handling

Can an anilox roller be stored directly on its engraved surface?

Use only the roller maker's approved storage arrangement and suitable protective supports. Do not place the engraving on a hard rack edge, unverified padding or a contaminated bench.

Should a protective cover be fitted immediately after cleaning?

Only after the roller has been rinsed and dried according to the approved procedure and the cover itself is clean. Trapped liquid or chemical residue can create another condition to investigate.

What should happen after an anilox roller receives a light impact?

Quarantine it, record the contact point and circumstances, photograph the roller and have its surface and mechanical condition assessed by the approved method before returning it to press.

How can the wrong anilox roller be prevented from reaching the press?

Use a controlled serial-number and specification record, labelled rack positions and a check against the job ticket at removal and installation. Colour markings can assist identification but should not replace the record.

What information is useful for an anilox storage review?

Send the roller inventory, specifications, weights and dimensions, rack and cover photographs, cleaning method, route to each press, lifting equipment, access constraints, damage history and existing inspection reports.
