A mounted plate can look acceptable on the table and still cost metres of material during register. The mounting record should prove where each plate was placed, on which sleeve, using which tape and within what tolerance. For repeat work, the record also needs to be retrievable without retyping coordinates from an old job card. Save the data at mounting, while the evidence is still available.

Define the job before the first plate

Import or enter the job, colour, press, repeat, sleeve and mounting coordinates from an approved source. A barcode or network connection can reduce transcription, but the operator must still verify that the selected job matches the physical plate and sleeve.

Verify sleeve and mandrel condition

Identify the sleeve and inspect its edges, surface and bore. Measure runout where required and confirm that the mounting mandrel is clean and appropriate. A plate cannot be mounted into reliable register on an unstable reference.

Record any accepted deviation and who approved it. Do not hide sleeve condition inside a generic note such as 'checked'.

Record tape and plate construction

Save plate thickness, tape product and thickness, plate ID and orientation by colour. Photograph the plate ID or scan it if the workflow allows. This prevents a later dispute about whether a register issue came from mounting or from mixed components.

Check total build against the press specification before mounting. A coordinate report does not detect an incorrect plate or tape thickness.

Measure actual position against target

Use the mounter's recognition or camera system to place the plate and record actual X, Y and angular position against programmed coordinates. Set a plant-approved tolerance by application rather than accepting every result the machine can physically mount.

Inspect laydown and joint quality

Check for bubbles, stretched tape, overlapping seams, lifted edges and damage. Inspect plate joints and critical image areas while rotating the sleeve. Add photographs of unusual but approved constructions.

A mounting pass should cover both position and physical adhesion. Perfect coordinates do not help if an edge lifts at production speed.

Control repeat-job recall

Store the approved record under a unique job revision. When artwork or press conditions change, create a new revision rather than overwriting the old result. At recall, verify plate and sleeve IDs before automatic movement begins.

Compare press register adjustment with the mounting report. Repeated corrections in one direction can reveal a master-data, mounter-calibration or press-reference issue and should trigger investigation.

Run a controlled production trial

Use a complete multicolour repeat job, the largest plate and any multi-plate sleeve arrangement. Agree the test roll, normal operating range and responsible operator before starting. Begin from verified mechanical condition and approved consumables. Change one variable at a time, allow the process to stabilise and retain samples from make-ready, steady production and the end of the roll. A short demonstration at an easy setting does not prove that the process will hold through a commercial job.

During the trial, monitor job data, plate and sleeve identity, tape, coordinates, camera recognition, laydown and report generation. Mark every deliberate change and production event on the same timeline. Acceptance should require actual position inside tolerance, secure edges, no trapped air and a report matched to the correct revision. If the result is outside the agreed limit, preserve the sample and machine state long enough to identify the cause instead of making several unrecorded corrections.

Turn the result into a pressroom standard

Save job revision, colour, plate, sleeve, tape, target and actual coordinates, variance, images and approval. Attach photographs, measurement reports and an approved finished sample where useful. Give the recipe a revision and link it to the exact material, artwork or machine configuration. Operators should be able to see what may be adjusted, the permitted range, the time allowed for stabilisation and who approves an exception.

Define a stop and escalation rule for wrong job data, an unidentified component, variance outside tolerance or a lifted or damaged plate. Review repeat faults by station, material and shift instead of treating each one as a separate surprise. A good standard does not remove judgement; it gives experienced operators reliable evidence and prevents the next shift from undoing a successful correction.
