Do not order an anilox from line count alone. Start with the ink film the job needs, the plate screen, the substrate and the part of the design that is hardest to print. A roll that is suitable for fine process work may be a poor choice for an opaque white or coating. Record volume, engraving, geometry and measurement method together so the specification can be checked when the roll arrives and again after service.

Start with the application

Define the substrate, ink or coating, press configuration, plate screen, required opacity and target running speed. Fine process work, barcodes, solid spot colours, opaque white and functional coatings all ask the anilox to perform differently.

The same roll should not automatically be expected to produce a delicate highlight and deposit a heavy white film. Where the job mix is broad, a planned anilox inventory usually provides more consistent results than trying to force every application through one specification.

Balance line count and cell volume

Line count describes how closely cells are arranged; volume describes the amount the engraved surface can carry. These values work together, but neither alone predicts the final ink film. Cell geometry, engraving condition, ink rheology and transfer efficiency also matter.

Higher line counts are generally associated with finer graphics, while stronger solids and opaque whites commonly need greater usable volume. The practical goal is the lowest volume that reliably achieves the target colour or opacity without compromising clean transfer and plate compatibility.

Specify, measure and maintain

Record the approved job condition: roll identity, engraving, volume, ink, viscosity, substrate, plate and achieved colour values. This turns anilox selection into a repeatable production standard rather than operator memory.

Cell contamination and wear reduce effective volume over time. Regular cleaning, microscopic inspection and volume measurement help distinguish an anilox problem from an ink, plate or press-setting problem. Protecting roll surfaces during handling is equally important.
